So what took Facebook offline today? An internet hiccup, or a new love interest?
If you tried to log on to the popular social networking site Facebook today, you probably were greeted with a shocking revelation.
Yes, even the biggest websites can go offline. Users trying to log on today most likely saw the page at the right.
A DNS Error occurs when a website cannot be identified by its IP address, which is like a house’s address on the world wide web. In this case, Facebook’s servers went offline for some reason, and users could not connect.
Facebook isn’t telling anyone what caused the error, but Facebook now serves about 500 million users that rely on Facebook every day to stay in touch with each other. It is being increasingly used by employers to research prospective employees, professors schedule tests and talk to students with it. It has become a major institution in daily life, and serves to remind us how much the internet controls us in this day and age.

This small hiccup in Facebook’s operation is being dwarfed by Facebook’s founder Mark Zuckerberg’s significant other Priscilla Chan, who he publicly admitted he is dating. She is a third year medical student and the two have plans to marry in the future.
Zuckerberg’s net worth may well be approaching and may have eclipsed that of Apple CEO Steve Jobs of $7 billion.
He has announced his new girlfriend just as a new documentary “The Social Network” is coming out about Zuckerberg’s rise to fame and where the idea of Facebook came from. The film investigates the controversial foundings of Facebook, some claiming that Zuckerberg stole the idea from his college peers.
“The Social Network” premiers October 1st.
