Red River of Toxic Sludge In Hungary Kills 4 Injures 123

Toxic Waste In Hungary

A “red river” of 1 million cubic meters of toxic goo has been sweeping through three counties in Hungary and has killed four people including a child and has injured up to 123 people. Six people are still missing as the toxic red sludge from an aluminum production plant has swept through at least seven towns in Hungary over 15 square miles.

The sludge can cause burns to the skin and poisoning if ingested and is a by product of aluminum production containing various poisonous heavy metals. The burns may not show for several days and deep tissue damage can occur.

Townspeople have campaigned for years to get the Timfoldgyar alumina plant in Ajka to clean up its act, but it now looks as if the red sludge may reach and contaminate the Danube and Raba Rivers, major waterways, creating an ecological disaster.

The toxic goo was sent wreaking havoc along the countryside as a dam wall that was holding back the sludge collapsed after a wet summer in Hungary, allowing the reddish aluminum waste products to spread.
