Charlie The Smoking Chimp is Dead

Charlie the smoking chimp was 52

It seems Charlie The Smoking Chimpanzee has taken his last puff, and he had a relatively long life.

Most chimps in captivity don’t make it past 40, and it seems Charlie died of old age, but Charlie wasn’t on a pack a day habit like some lifelong addicts. Zookeepers said they only saw Charlie light up only about five times in 15 years.

But Charlie may have been hiding his habit. Zookeepers say he always threw away his smokes with a grin when zookeepers spotted him.

The 52 year old smoking chimpanzee died Tuesday in Bloemfontein, South Africa apparently of old age and not from smoking.

Zoo keepers noticed about 5 years ago that visitors were tossing Charlie cigarettes and tried to encourage Charlie to stop picking up the cigarettes and mimicking a habit most people are trying to quit.

Charlie’s body will be stuffed, mounted, and displayed in an area featuring other popular zoo residents.
