Cyclone Yassi has made landfall near Queensland Australia with wind gusts near 185 miles per hour.
The cyclone is the deadliest and most powerful in a century, and Australia has already had its share of deadly flooding this summer in the southern hemisphere.
Waves as high as 40 feet expected to hit the north Queensland coast.
Communications with off shore islands like Willis Island have been permanently cut off, and it is not clear when they will return.
Yasi made landfall in Mission Beach. The whole town was nearly obliterated.
Half a billion dollars in damage is expected as Yasi now weakens from Category 5 cyclone status over mainland Australia.
