36 people were crushed to death against a metal barrier in a stampede that happened after a speech by an imam at a Muslim ceremony in Mali at the Modibo Keita Stadium.
64 others were reported wounded after Imam Osman Madani Haidara spoke at the start of the Muslim holy period of Maouloud.
“The stadium seats 25,000 and it was absolutely full, as it is every time Imam Osman Madani Haidara gives a sermon,” a spokesman at the British embassy said.
As tens of thousands of people were attempting to leave through a metallic enclosure, a panic began and a surge of people pushed forwards towards the exit, crushing to death those at the front.
At the scene where people had been crushed to death, piles of shoes were put into a van. A young girl sat on a bucket nearby crying. Both of her parents were killed.
