11 people are dead in a serious hot air balloon crash 94 miles north of Wellington New Zealand in the town of Carterton.
Bypasses and witnesses say they saw 32-foot high flames rising from the balloon’s basket before it crashed to the ground.
One local resident saw the crash said, “It was just above the trees when I first saw it … it looked like he (the pilot) tried to raise it a bit higher … all of a sudden there was just 10 meters of flames…It was like a rocket coming down — it was just unbelievable.”
Conditions were favorable with clear skies and no wind. It is not known what caused the crash.
The region north of New Zealand’s capital city Wellington is well known for hot air ballooning.
