The Nevada Department of Transportation is handing out special red license plates to companies like Google that test automated robotic cars.

Google’s robotic Prius cars have already driven over 200,000 miles in California and Nevada is next.

Last June Nevada Governor Sandoval signed bill AB511 into law, making it legal for the robotic cars to hit the road.

Eventually the robot cars will have neon green license plates after testing, indicating the driver is not in control of the vehicle.

Nevada has the responsibility for setting performance and safety standards under the new law.
