Rick Santorum’s exit from the GOP race for president came just hours after his daughter Bella’s exit from the hospital from a genetic condition.

Santorum is expected to announce a suspension in his campaign rather than formally ending it to allow him to continue to raise money to cover the campaign debt incurred over the last year.

Santorum would have needed a certain win Pennsylvania to gain that state’s large number of delegates from Mitt Romney.

Santorum’s defeat in his home state of Pennsylvania would have been especially embarrassing and his campaign suspension seems well timed.

His daughter Bella’s illness is also being used as a reason to keep heat off his likely political defeat in Pennsylvania.

Both Ron Paul and Newt Gingrich have not won any recent races and severely lack in delegates needed to win.

Santorum quit the race with 252 delegates compared to 645 for Romney. A candidate needs 1,144 delegates to win nomination.

Gingrich and Paul need to keep Romney below that 1,144 threshold to challenge him in the GOP convention in August.
