By A moron pointed a high powered green laser at two aircraft over JFK Tuesday evening. Pointing a laser at an aircraft is a federal crime.
The chartered flight out of Iceland called air traffic control to report the laser attack. Laser attacks around landing and takeoff at airports are critical and having a laser attack in the cockpit only adds another problem.
The laser can cause permanent blindness and eye damage to pilots in the cockpit. By the time the beam reaches the cockpit, it actually expands into a wider beam.
There are no limits on purchasing lasers, and the FAA is urging new laws to prevent accidents and attacks by lasers.
Most pilots consider the people that shine lasers at airplanes “terrorists”.
