Tiger shot dead after mauling zoo keeper to death in Germany

A tiger at Cologne Zoo in western Germany escaped when a gate wasn’t properly shut and mauled a zookeeper to death.

The zoo was evacuated and the SWAT team was called in to kill the tiger but the zoo’s director beat them to it.

He climbed onto the roof of where the tiger was and shot it dead through a skylight with a high caliber rifle.

“This is the darkest day of my life,” the zoo’s director, Theo Pagel, was quoted as saying by Cologne newspaper Express.
