Whenever I come back from North Carolina’s Outer Banks, I like to to take the back roads.
The best way to come is to drive on the old U.S. Route 13 on Maryland’s eastern shore.
Along this route, you get to avoid the craziness of Richmond, VA traffic and take the scenic Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. Next time you are headed south to the beaches, take U.S. Route 13, you won’t regret it.

Driving up this old highway on Maryland's eastern shore, you feel isolated from the craziness of Baltimore and Washington DC

All up and down U.S. 13, I feel like I'm driving into the past, when all the towns up and down this historic highway sent their seafood and produce all over the state.

Much more peaceful than the rat race along I-95 in Virginia.

While driving on U.S. 13 headed south to the Outer Banks beaches, you'll get to drive under the Chesapeake Bay on the U.S. 13 bridge tunnel.
Along the way, there are plenty of scenic overlooks you can stop on to take pictures. The route goes through a wildlife refuge you can stop at to take pictures. Make sure to bring bug spray!
Looks like you’re passing by Exmore looking at those train tracks in that one picture!
