Beach week draws black crowd – and violence

Reporters with all the local media had trouble describing what happened over the weekend when 40,000 black people descended on Virginia Beach for a party.

Over 150 were arrested over the weekend.

Over the weekend, 40,000 college students, predominantly black visited the beach front as part of a pre-finals week event for students from area colleges.

The organizer’s event webpage http://beachweekva.com is down. They helped promote the event at area colleges, mostly to African American fraternities. Police said they had little warning of the event. Flyers were posted at Virginia universities, including Norfolk State, Hampton and Virginia Commonwealth.

Many have been careful not to bring race into the picture, but many residents say the same crowd appears every year and wreaks havoc on the town.

Store owners reported store front windows busted out, assaults outside of their shops, and one store owner even had bikes stolen from her property.

Police say there were 325 calls between 6 p.m. Saturday and 6 a.m. Sunday, which is four times as many as were received last year.

James Ricketts, director of the Virginia Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau, said he isn’t concerned and believes many potential tourists will view the incident as an “isolated” event.
