The world’s first robot astronaut has begun chatting to the Japanese commander of the International Space Station, in what was being billed as the first conversation of its kind.

Kirobo, a pint-sized android equipped with artificial intelligence and capable of learning how to respond appropriately to humans, even put a marker down for Christmas, telling Koichi Wakata he expected a visit from a certain man bearing gifts.

The little fella actually said “Santa Claus will come to space”.

The conversation was part of an unscripted dialogue with Space Station astronaut Koichi Wakata. WHen Wakata asked Kirobo what it wanted for Christmas, it said it would like a toy rocket.

Kirobo can take photos and can even Tweet from its own twitter account.

The goal of having Kirobo up in space is to see if the robot can act as a companion for isolated people and to see if it can develop conversational skills.

Kirobo has been up in space since August 10.
