Japanese silicon plant explodes injuring and killing workers

Five workers now reported dead

A police spokesman in Mie, Japan said that a number of people have been injured and killed from an explosion at a Mitsubishi Materials plant.

The French Press is reporting that five workers are now dead.

The police spokesman said there was some kind of chemical reaction at the plant during operations.

The spokeswoman for the company is denying anyone has died.

Ranko Hirai, a spokeswoman at Mitsubishi Materials, said: ‘We confirmed that there was an explosion at our plant in Yokkaichi, where we produce silicon materials. We have also confirmed that people were injured. We don’t know about deaths.’
