Republicans in the State House of Maryland rejected a commission’s recommendation to raise the pay of Maryland legislators from $43,500 to $50,330.
The pay hike was not put to a vote.
“All the taxes that have been levied on families, they are having a tough time making ends meet, so we don’t think it is appropriate for legislators to get a raise at this current time the way the economy is,” House Minority Whip Kathy Szeliga said.
The raise comes on top of a new budget that raises taxes for Marylanders.
California lawmakers make an astonishing $90,000 a year.
