After Sunday’s rain with temperatures in the 40’s for the Baltimore Metro area, the temperature is now dropping to below freezing, causing ice to form on many roadways.
Caution is urged by the National Weather Service for motorists driving early Monday morning in the area. Use extreme caution on bridges which freeze first and on side streets and highway ramps.
Earlier Sunday ice forming on roadways is believed to have contributed to a fatal accident on Route 29.
State highway officials claimed that the National Weather Service official statement that warned of freezing roadways came too late Sunday for road crews to get out and treat roads.
Farther north into Pennsylvania and New Jerseys roads were shut down due to the low temperatures and icy conditions. All major bridges into and out of New Jersey and Philadelphia were shut down and a massive pile up occurred on I-76 in Pennsylvania.
